Subject

Managing Hypertension and the Comorbidities of Dyslipidemia, Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome.

Statement of Need:

Hypertension is the most common reason for the use of prescription drugs in the United States. Data from the Centers for Disease Control indicates a prevalence of 30.1% in adults over age 20 (approximately 65 million people). Hypertension is associated with a number of serious complications, including cardiovascular disease, heart failure, stroke, chronic renal insufficiency and renal failure. It is estimated that only 34% of persons with hypertension have their blood pressure under control. Hypertension is only one of the disease states that will increase in prevalence with obesity.

Dyslipidemia, the metabolic syndrome, and diabetes, will follow closely on the coat-tails of obesity. Among adults, the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes has increased 61% since 1991, and it is projected to more than double by 2050.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:

1.
Analyze recent data on prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of hypertension and the comorbidities of dyslipidemia, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome for a better awareness of this cluster of disorders.
2.
Propose strategies for the earlier diagnosis of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and sub-clinical vascular disease, with the goal of preventing events.
3.
Assess global risk assessment, and its implications for treating hypertension, dyslipidemia, and other cardiovascular risk factors in patients at risk.
4.
Evaluate guideline-approved screening and risk assessment strategies for the diabetic patient who does not have a history of avert cardiovascular disease.
